It was approved by 3GPP in 1999 as the UTRA-NTDD (Universal Terrestrial Radio Access - Narrowband Time Division Duplex) member of the UMTS standard family, often referred to as TDD-LCR (Time-Division-Duplex-Low Chip Rate).
